We had a discussion on Intellectual Property- Is copying right?
Basically, Intellectual Property is copyright in layman term. We watched a video entitled " Copy not right! " acted by Hossan Leong, teaching us on copyright and the consequences if we infringe on copyright. Also, it taught us how to prevent copyright infringment, such as getting permission from the owner, stating the sources, etc. As for books, we can only copy 10% of it.
I learnt alot about copyright from the video. I recalled back in primary school, copyright was the least of my concerns. Everytime we did a project, we just copy and paste information without stating the sources. Thankfully, we did not land up in deep trouble. Moving on to secondary school, the teachers expect us to state our sources clearly for all the projects we do.
My reflection of the topic is : Everyone should follow the copyright rule and those who violate it should be punished. Imagine, someone copying your work and passing it off as his own work, without even acknowledging the source, let alone getting permission from you to do it, I believe that will make anyone upset. The free riders did not put in any effort but reap all the benefits from it. This is totally unfair.
As we do more and more projects in secondary school, it is time for us to know what copyright law is about and what will happen to us if we don’t follow it. In the worst case scenario, we can be sued if we infringe on copy right law. It is no wonder our teachers have been urging us to state all our sources. If we don’t and someone finds out, we can be put behind bars, no joke about that, this is real.
In conclusion, if the work or item is not ours, we should seek permission from the owner if possible or if this is not possible, then we should simply state the source clearly. It is something that everyone has to do and there is no exception.
This is the end of my reflections for lesson 2.
